Life Lie #3

success is when hard work meets opportunity

False. Success is far more complicated. Whether you receive this faux wisdom from your favorite entrepreneur-turned-billionaire or every contemporary motivational speaker, pay close attention to the part that’s not amplified and glorified i.e. opportunity.

Instead of wondering why certain opportunities may be out of reach, you are now compelled to focus on something you’re not doing well enough. Instead of trying to understand what external factors might be enhancing or limiting your shot at the big leagues, now you grapple with internal issues that may or may not be relevant.

There are plenty of people who don’t work very hard and enjoy success. There are also people who work extremely hard and never make it to the top. Neither of these people make sensational stories or statistical graphs, but they’re real people all the same.

In short, success is determined by much more than just your effort. Don’t assume that there’s something inherently wrong with yourself or that the reason you didn’t strike gold is because you didn’t work hard enough.

Hang it up.

Life Lie #2

If it’s important to you, you’ll find a way. If it’s not, you’ll find an excuse

False. You are not in control of everything, neither is anyone else. There are simply too many factors on which our lives depend. Sometimes, you can’t do the things you want to do. That doesn’t necessarily reflect that you don’t care enough. It could just mean that something else came in the way e.g. a medical emergency, family obligation, an oppressive political regime, etc.

It’s nice to think that we are capable of everything we set out to do. However, it is what it is - a nice thought. To presume that life will bend and bow according to our wishes is to be foolhardy. To expect someone else to force the arc of their life in our direction is even worse.

Hang it up.

Life Lie #1

it is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for something you are not

False. What you are is in an eternal state of flux, as is what you are not. There’s not much anyone can do about that, so why bother aspiring to anything that isn’t your entire, variegated being?

Hang it up.
